Summary

Some chilling campfire tales ring too true to ignore。 For one young woman, an urban legend calls her into the woods in a spine-tingling short story by the bestselling author of Bird Box。 The dense Michigan forest。 Haunting wails。 The clip-clop of demon hooves on a bridge to nowhere。 It’s more than a tall tale to Brenda Jennings, whose sister disappeared in those woods one fateful night。 Three years later, on a solo stakeout in the dark, Brenda goes in after her。 She’s desperate for answers, and terrified to find what lies waiting on the other side of that bridge。

Josh Malerman’s "It Waits in the Woods" is part of Creature Feature , a collection of devilishly creepy stories that tingle the spine and twist the mind。 They can be read or listened to in one petrifying sitting。

What a thriller! So haunting felt the intensity through the whole story。 HAD to keep reading。 Read it alone in the woods and totally freak out!

This is the third in Amazon’s Creature Feature series and comes from the author of Bird Box。 He sets the stage well by sharing a creepy legend and situates the reader in the story。 I became invested from the start even though the characters are so different from me。 Then in quick succession, he plants little land mines that drove me deeper into the story。 By its end, I was racing and running in the woods expecting an explosion。 This is how to write a story, especially a horror story。 It’s never This is the third in Amazon’s Creature Feature series and comes from the author of Bird Box。 He sets the stage well by sharing a creepy legend and situates the reader in the story。 I became invested from the start even though the characters are so different from me。 Then in quick succession, he plants little land mines that drove me deeper into the story。 By its end, I was racing and running in the woods expecting an explosion。 This is how to write a story, especially a horror story。 It’s never the monster, it’s the threat of the monster。 。。。more

{3。5 stars}This one had a bit of a haunted mansion vibe but in the forest。 I loved the balance of reality with the fable of horror。 I wanted more than I got but it did the job of making me think twice about going into the woods!

It's a solid little story that had a bittersweet ending。 Although I wish I knew more about the monster。 It's a solid little story that had a bittersweet ending。 Although I wish I knew more about the monster。 。。。more

Slow (even for a short story) and didn’t try or do anything new。

creepy short story

This short story is a great example of how different the reading versus listening can be。 It would have been creepy on paper, but was truly terrifying on audio。

If you've seen BuzzFeed unsolved episodes on The Goatman and Mothman - this is very much the vibes。 I did quite like it, it played in my head like a found footage horror (would recommend to fans of Blair Witch)。 If you've seen BuzzFeed unsolved episodes on The Goatman and Mothman - this is very much the vibes。 I did quite like it, it played in my head like a found footage horror (would recommend to fans of Blair Witch)。 。。。more

I loved the urban legend aspect of this novella。 This was a good spooky campfire story。 Kept me on my toes until the very end! I would love to read this as a full novel。

While this book did have some pretty decent tense moments and brought back some childhood fears I’m not sure how in love with the ending I am

I read this one with audiobook。 The narrator did a great job!

It Waits in the Woods by Josh MalermanThis is the third story in the Creature Feature collection by Amazon。 Very creepy indeed!

I have several of Malerman's novels on my TBR, but this is the first work of his I've read。 And I can see why he gets movie deals。 This is a writer who knows how to say a lot with a little。 Fifty-two pages, and I was at the edge of my seat with a story I related to from my very bones, with a protagonist I desperately wanted to see win (or at least live), even though I knew the likeliness of that。 Now I definitely have to read his novels。 Bravo, sir。 I have several of Malerman's novels on my TBR, but this is the first work of his I've read。 And I can see why he gets movie deals。 This is a writer who knows how to say a lot with a little。 Fifty-two pages, and I was at the edge of my seat with a story I related to from my very bones, with a protagonist I desperately wanted to see win (or at least live), even though I knew the likeliness of that。 Now I definitely have to read his novels。 Bravo, sir。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Ooh this got my chest feeling a little tight, was holding my breathe for at least 50% of this book。 Forests are a great setting for scary scenes, people going missing in a forest, the same forest rumoured to have a demon who had no face and is looking to find one。 I was tense from the get go。 Why would you walk in to a forest alone to look for a demon who you think is kidnapping people to steal their faces??? Rather Brenda than me…。but I guess fortune favours the brave in the end。 Still sat here Ooh this got my chest feeling a little tight, was holding my breathe for at least 50% of this book。 Forests are a great setting for scary scenes, people going missing in a forest, the same forest rumoured to have a demon who had no face and is looking to find one。 I was tense from the get go。 Why would you walk in to a forest alone to look for a demon who you think is kidnapping people to steal their faces??? It wasn’t a terrible story, but it didn’t make me want more。

A girl investigates a forest where her sister went missing years prior, knowing a myth of a faceless demon dwells there。 This was just as spooky as the others in the collection but it took just a little while to get going。 Once it did, I was really creeped out in the best way

Jacob Elliott

I didn't think I was going to like this story as much as I did, but wow it blew me away。 I think the ending dragged it down to a 4。5 for me, but here I'll give it 5 because it was truly a tension filled, horrifying read。 I didn't think I was going to like this story as much as I did, but wow it blew me away。 I think the ending dragged it down to a 4。5 for me, but here I'll give it 5 because it was truly a tension filled, horrifying read。 。。。more

I highly recommend listening to this rather than reading it with your eyes。 The creepy sounds of the creature are absolutely horrifying! The story was well paced but the best part was those sounds。 How did this narrator do that!?? I am fascinated。

Nathaniel Darkish

I wanted a more twisted ending, but overall thought this story was a fun horror romp。

Stephanie Linnell

This was such a good short story, though I shouldn't be surprised as I've loved everything I've read from Malerman and he's one of my top horror authors。 The story was really creepy and the end was amazing! 4。25/5 stars! Oh my goodness why did she go by herself in the woods?!?! Aaaaaah! I’m definitely a scaredy cat I guess when it comes to going into the woods especially when it’s dark by myself。 This book had me creeped out。 Boo!

Ashley (book_grams)

This reminded me of The Blair Witch Project and it had some creepy vibes。 Definitely recommend the audiobook as there were some chilling voice effects。 Not a bad story but I wasn’t blown away by the ending。
